“Professionally, I worked in the field of special education for over 30 years. My bachelor’s degree is in elementary education. University of Wisconsin – Platteville provided a program focused on creating cross curricular units and formative assessment. I have taught in an alternative high school, residential schools, and public schools. In the middle school setting, while teaching a self-contained classroom, I cotaught with teachers to plan successful inclusive settings for students with behavioral and emotional disorders. While teaching, I earned two master’s degrees. The first was in social emotional learning and learning disabilities. Eventually, I served in a semi-administrative role at the middle school, facilitating IEP meetings and working with all department members in a leadership role while still carrying a case load. Coaching cheerleaders, cross country, and building a leadership club gave me insight into the ‘norms’ of middle school behaviors. I earned my second master’s in administration from Benedictine University. As an elementary assistant principal, I worked with the parent-teacher organization to build a Peaceful Playground, led the building professional development team, worked with the Danielson model of evaluation, and facilitated all special education and discipline. As an active member of the Illinois Council for Exceptional Children, I served as membership chair and state president. I represented the Illinois Council for Exceptional Children as a lobbyist and met with Illinois legislators annually.

“My philosophy has always been: You are only as strong as your weakest link. I surround myself with passionate team members, believing that everyone has strength and value that helps students and adult learners grow and shine.

“I love reviewing books for Doody’s. Writers’ styles vary, and subject matter covers fields that need new looks and updating. On the other hand, there are books that are not there yet and need fine tuning to become viable contributions to the field. Reviewing keeps me current, makes me question methodology, and challenges the current realities of the book’s field. It helps to better the quality and accuracy of information offered to students and professionals from ‘experts in the field.’

“I found Existential Selves: Freedom, Chaos and the Search for Meaning both reflective and relevant for the times we as humans and a nation are facing. The collection was a blend of historical applications of philosophy and personal narratives. The narratives were written by students and applied existentialism to their varied personal situations. It is a book that someone can reread and perhaps gain new perspectives as time goes on.”
