Since Dr. Patricia Thomas began as Editorial Review Group Chair in Medical Education in August 2017, we have sent her 99 books in that field as well as in Physician Assistant studies. In a little over these past two years, she has recruited 45 reviewers from seven different institutions who have already submitted 56 reviews.

Dr. Thomas is currently Amasa B. Ford Professor of Geriatrics, Professor of Medicine, and Vice Dean for Medical Education at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She was recruited to Case Western in 2014 after 25 years on faculty at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she served as core faculty of the Johns Hopkins Faculty Development Workshop for 21 years, and as Associate Dean for Curriculum for 10 years.

Dr. Thomas is an editor of the textbook, Barker, Burton, and Zieve’s Principles of Ambulatory Medicine, 7th edition, Fiebach et al. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2007), and coauthor and editor of the monograph, Curriculum Development for Medical Education: A Six-Step Approach, 3rd edition, Thomas et al. (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2016). (The latter was designated an Essential Purchase Title for Doody’s Core Titles 2019.) At Hopkins, she was intimately involved in the design and implementation of the “Genes to Society” curriculum in the School of Medicine. In 2011, she became one of the inaugural teaching faculty for the Master’s of Education in the Health Professions program at Johns Hopkins University.

At Case Western she has overseen the inauguration of four educational pathways — the Mandell Wellness and Preventive Medicine Pathway, the Medical Humanities Pathway, the Healthcare Innovation and Entrepreneurship Pathway, and World Medicine Pathway — in the MD program and is introducing several innovations in health systems science. She also directed the launch of the MSc in Physician Assistant Studies degree in 2016 and has been an active contributor and proponent of interprofessional education at Case Western Reserve University.

She has served as an educational consultant for medical education in the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, and Turkey, and has conducted workshops for medical education in Japan, Korea, Peru, and Uganda. She continues to teach faculty, internal medicine residents, and medical students and has received several teaching awards as well as election to Alpha Omega Alpha. In 2013, she received the Society of General Internal Medicine Career Achievement in Medical Education award.
