Dr. Anne Turner-Henson has served as Editorial Review Group Chair for Pediatric Nursing since 2013, and we have sent her 74 books in the past five years. She has coordinated reviews of 55 of them, calling on a network of 23 pediatric nurses in academia, clinical practice, and industry, while also reviewing a significant number herself.

Dr. Turner-Henson recently retired from University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing where she was Professor of Nursing since 1982, and held joint appointments in the Schools of Medicine (General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine) and Public Health (Maternal Child Health). She dedicated herself to providing visionary leadership in research, policy development (local, state, national), and community empowerment in the areas of child health, environmental health, and children with special needs.

Her research program focuses on children’s health, from the perspectives of cardiovascular and respiratory health and environmental health concerns. Her current research focuses on the child and parent factors influencing blood pressure in low-income, preschool children (investigator). This current study is examining children’s biomarkers of inflammation and stress, as well as parental factors.

Dr. Turner-Henson has extensive experience in interdisciplinary research in community-based settings and in community participatory research. She served as principal investigator on multiple interdisciplinary research teams, such as empowering communities to reduce children’s environmental risks (PI, funded by EPA), reducing children’s secondhand smoke exposure (PI, funded by CDC), perceptions of African Americans about children’s secondhand smoke exposure (PI, funded by CDC) and as investigator on two studies of asthma in schools (investigator, funded by NHLBI). Her previous research examined the everyday life experiences of children and adolescents with special healthcare needs (PI, funded by NIH) and two collaborative international studies (PI, funded by Sigma Theta Tau, American Nurses Foundation, Fogarty) examining parenting stress and health promoting behaviors among mothers of very young children with special healthcare needs.

She also has provided service to multiple state and national committees as an advocate for child health. She served as a member of the Middle Child expert panel for the 4th revision of the Bright Futures document (AAP, national standards for well child care for ACA). Dr. Turner-Henson was inducted in 2010 as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, and she served as cochair for the Child/Adolescent/Family expert panel. She also served as a member of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Children’s Health Protection Advisory Committee (2006-2011) and as vice-president of the Southern Nursing Research Society, 2008-2012.

Dr. Turner-Henson has provided visionary leadership in children’s environmental health. Empowering communities through building grassroots initiatives to reduce children’s environmental risk and promote healthy communities is a key focus of her work. Through the interplay of her interdisciplinary research, programmatic development, and grassroots and community empowerment and policymaking efforts she has focused national and state level attention on improving the lives of children and families.
