This month’s specialty profile on Workplace Violence in Health Care represents the fourth and final installment of our 2023-2024 Doody’s Special Topics Lists.
Healthcare professionals are a pillar of society that manages and supplements our well-being in many ways. However, systems are needed to ensure those professionals are provided the same care and protection. Health care is a high-stress, high-risk environment, and many professionals, especially front-line workers, are susceptible to violence in the workplace. To ensure healthcare professionals can provide great care, special attention is needed to maintain their immediate safety and protection as well as their work-life balance and well-being.
This Doody’s Special Topics List compiles a variety of materials related to workplace violence in health care, including hospital-based injuries, patient violence, bullying, incivility, and discrimination. Numerous titles are solution-focused, covering different safety measures, violence prevention programs, and de-escalation tactics. Some titles cover emerging topics in workplace violence, while others offer historical context for current problems that can be traced back decades. It is our hope that this list of diverse perspectives and methodologies will help librarians identify and promote resources that offer pragmatic solutions to prevent and respond to workplace violence in health care.
