Since 1999, we have been fortunate to have Dr. Carol Scott-Conner as Chair of the General Surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, and Oncologic Surgery Editorial Review Groups. From 1995 through 2005, she served as Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, where she continues on the faculty in the Divisions of Surgical Oncology and Trauma, Burns, and Surgical Critical Care. Over the years, we have sent her 511 titles, and she and her 125 reviewers have submitted reviews of 337 surgery books (and counting!) for Doody’s Review Service.

Dr. Scott-Conner earned her BS in Electrical Engineering at MIT. She received her MD degree and completed surgical residency at the New York University Medical Center. She subsequently received a PhD in Anatomy and Cell Biology from the University of Kentucky, and an MBA from the Else School of Management at Millsaps College.

She is author or editor of nine surgical textbooks, including Essential Operative Techniques and Anatomy (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins), The SAGES Manual: Fundamentals of Laparoscopy, GI Endoscopy, and Thoracoscopy (Springer) , and the third and fourth editions of Chassin’s Operative Strategy in General Surgery (Springer). She is a member of numerous surgical societies, including the American Surgical Association, the Society of Surgical Oncologists, and the Central Surgical Association. She is former coeditor in chief of the journal Surgical Laparoscopy, Endoscopy, and Percutaneous Techniques, and is a member of numerous other editorial boards. She also serves as editor-in-chief of the literary journal of the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, The Examined Life, and is author of a book of short stories set in the realm of academic medicine.
