Dr. Mark Hurwitz has served as Editorial Review Group Chair in Radiation Oncology since March 2017. In the little over two years since then, we have sent him 58 books and he and 11 reviewers have submitted 31 reviews of them.

Dr. Hurwitz is Professor and Vice-Chair for Quality, Safety, and Performance Excellence and Director of Thermal Oncology for the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. He also serves as Chair of the Jefferson Health Enterprise Oncology Quality Committee leading quality and safety oversight for 10,000 new patients annually at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson.

On national and international levels, Professor Hurwitz has directed research efforts on advancing translation of biology and technology into clinical practice. Dr. Hurwitz has an extensive track record of leading clinical trials that have advanced treatment of genitourinary malignancies and application of thermal medicine. He served as principal investigator for successfully completed RTOG and CALGB studies for prostate cancer and is currently the principal investigator of NRG GU002, an international phase II/III trial building on the success of RTOG 0621. Dr. Hurwitz has also led groundbreaking trials in thermal oncology, including a phase II trial demonstrating benefit of hyperthermia in treatment of locally advanced prostate cancer. He served as PI of an international phase III trial that established the benefit of the use of magnetic resonance guided focus ultrasound treatment of painful bone metastases. Dr. Hurwitz previously served as the 24th President of the Society of Thermal Medicine.

He is the recipient of many awards including the B.B. Singh Oration awarded for outstanding contributions in the field of hyperthermia by the Indian Association for Hyperthermia in Oncology and Medicine, the Association of Residents in Radiation Oncology “Educator of the Year” at Thomas Jefferson University, and fellowships bestowed by the American Society for Radiation Oncology and American College of Radiation Oncology. He has published numerous papers, reviews, and book chapters. Dr. Hurwitz is an avid downhill skier, sailor, and enjoys a glass of fine wine in his free time.
