Dr. Carl Balcom has been a Doody’s Review Service book reviewer since 2021. He reviews book titles in nursing administration, management, and leadership, originally under former Editorial Review Group Chair, Dr. J. Michael Leger, and now under current Chair Dr. DeMonica Junious. 

Dr. Balcom is a seasoned healthcare executive with experience across the continuum of care, from quaternary critical care to community outreach programs. He is recognized for his results-oriented and patient-centered approach, as well as his ability to rapidly execute operational changes to improve care delivery and patient experience. 

As Assistant Vice President of Innovation Location Operations within Digital Transformation & Innovation (DT&I), Dr. Balcom has executive oversight of HCA Healthcare’s Innovation Hubs as well as early lifecycle digital product testing across the enterprise. 

Dr. Balcom holds a Diploma of Collegial Studies from Cégep Heritage College, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Business Administration (Health Administration) from the University of Ottawa, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (Executive Leadership) from Baylor University. He also holds a certification in Lean Six Sigma Black Belt from Belmont University.  

Dr. Balcom is a board-certified Nurse Executive–Advanced (NEA-BC) and is a Fellow of the American College of Health Executives. He is a graduate scholar from the Thomas C. Dolan Executive Diversity Program through the American College of Health Executives. 

Dr. Balcom has a long leadership tenure with HCA Healthcare. Prior to joining the DT&I team, Carl served as a Transitional Leader with Clinical Services Group in a number of divisions and facilities across the enterprise. He has a proven track record of driving improvements in care delivery, patient experience, and colleague engagement.  

Dr. Balcom is active professionally including serving as a member of the LPN Advisory Council of the Nevada State Board of Nursing, past chairperson of the ACHE examination committee, and a member of the Editorial Board for Healthcare Management Forum. 

On his experience reviewing for Doody’s, Dr. Balcom shares, “I enjoy reviewing books for Doody’s because it gives me the opportunity to serve my profession by helping support knowledge translation and identifying high-quality resources for the field. Dr. Balcom recently enjoyed reviewing Johnson and Stoskopf’s Comparative Health Systems: A Global Perspective, 3rd Edition, sharing “This book is exceptionally well organized and provides a clear overview of how health systems operate across a range of countries. At a time when the United States is experiencing significant change and ongoing health system transformation, I found it both professionally valuable and personally interesting to explore what works — and what does not — in other national systems. That broader perspective adds important context when thinking about policy, planning, and the future of healthcare.”
