Lori Peirson has been a reviewer for Doody’s Review Service since 2019. Speech, Language, and Hearing continues to be one of our largest growing specialties, and Lori has made a sizeable impact reviewing under our Speech, Language, and Hearing Review Group Chair, Dr. Matthew Rouse. Lori has reviewed 23 Speech, Language, and Hearing titles, with four of her reviewed titles earning the Essential Purchase Title tag for Doody’s Core Titles 2023, including  Assessment in Speech-Language Pathology: A Resource Manual, 6th Edition, Shipley (Plural Publishing, 2021) and Assessment of Communication Disorders in Children: Resources and Protocols, 4th Edition, Hegde (Plural Publishing, 2022). 

I have been a “reader” all my life. I rarely leave the house without a book in hand. In 1985, I obtained my master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology at Cal State Fullerton, and began working at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, California. Over the years, I became the manager of the department and stayed for 32 years. 

Having been given an opportunity to move to Biola University (my alma mater), I accepted the position of Instructor in the School of Science, Technology, and Health. I am currently an Assistant Professor at Biola University. 

I have enjoyed reading Doody’s books, because they add to my personal education and offer additional resources for the benefit of our students. I recently enjoyed Caring For a Loved One with Aphasia After Stroke: A Narrative-Based Support Guide for Caregivers, Families and Friends, Mozeiko and Yost (Springer, 2022). One doesn’t see a book like this very often. The book is full of real-life personal stories that enable readers to understand the subject of aphasia. It is a very unique type of book that illustrates a variety of problems for patients and their families. The book offers examples of how those with aphasia work through their issues in various ways, often demonstrating their love and commitment to one another during hard times and good times.
